Norton Anti-Computing Suite

Lately I’ve been working on a lot of computers that have Symantec Norton products installed and I’m appalled at the way they suck the life out of a computer while messing up the computing experience altogether…

The computers I use either run minimal XP installs [no anti-anything and no automatic updating] or Ubuntu Linux. I’ve never experienced any problems with either…

Nothing enters my computer that hasn’t been scanned by the antivirus in Gmail or downloaded from a reputable site. The result? My computers undoubtedly run better than yours…

Am I being naive or dangerous? Comment below…

Who wouldn’t like the idea of improving efficiency and reclaiming resources sucked up by anti-virus type software. The danger, as I see it, is learning the hard way that your reputable site wasn’t as reputable (or knowledgeable, careful and vigilant) as you thought. Everyday we see reports of “reputable” companies that are hacked/compromised. Also, I will often transfer a file from a trusted friend, by flash drive, to my computers. Without onboard “protection” I’ve have to stop that practice.

3 months after posting this still no problems. There is one tool that I do use to check my computer against malware and that is Spybot. Also, I avoid using internet explorer; firefox 3.0, flock and safari all take precedence for me…
